Dr Moses Paul has publicly condemned the killing of a young man identified as Mene Ogidi, expressing deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Dr. Moses Paul argued that the victim appeared helpless and posed no immediate threat at the time of the encounter. According to him, the young man should have been arrested and taken into custody instead of being fatally shot.
The incident had earlier generated widespread outrage after reports emerged that a police officer allegedly shot the young man at close range. The development sparked intense reactions from Nigerians on social media, with many demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the killing.
Reacting to the situation, Dr. Moses Paul stated that using deadly force against a restrained and defenseless individual cannot be justified. He described the action as not only unacceptable but also a serious failure of humanity and professional conduct.
He further stressed that true courage is not demonstrated through violence against vulnerable individuals, especially those who are no longer a threat. According to him, law enforcement officers are expected to uphold justice, protect lives, and act within the limits of the law at all times.
The former Labour Party chieftain also called on relevant authorities not to remain silent over the incident. He insisted that officers involved in the shooting must be investigated and held accountable if found responsible.
His comments have added to the growing public demand for transparency and justice in the case, with many Nigerians and civil society groups continuing to call for reforms aimed at improving accountability within the policing system.
