According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, June 7, 2026, Honourable Abdullahi A. Bello, Ph.D., former Speaker and one-time Acting Governor of Kogi State, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation across Northern Nigeria, describing the humanitarian conditions in many communities as painful and alarming.
Speaking on issues surrounding the conduct of party primaries, the growing crisis of confidence in the political process, the state of insecurity across the country, and developments ahead of the 2027 general election, Bello reflected on the challenges confronting the region and the urgent need for action.
Responding to a question on whether the North is prepared for elections amid the persistent attacks by insurgent groups, bandits, and other criminal elements, Bello acknowledged the difficult circumstances facing the region.
He noted that the scale of violence and instability affecting many Northern communities has raised serious concerns about the welfare and safety of the people, many of whom continue to endure hardship on a daily basis.
According to him, the security challenges have created a humanitarian situation that requires immediate attention from all levels of government.
He stressed that countless families have been displaced from their homes, while many communities continue to struggle with the effects of insecurity, including the loss of livelihoods, disruption of economic activities, and limited access to basic services.
Bello emphasized that the suffering experienced by residents across various parts of the North should not be ignored.
He stated that beyond security operations, there is a need for greater compassion and understanding toward affected communities.
He maintained that government interventions must focus not only on restoring peace but also on addressing the humanitarian consequences resulting from years of violence and instability.
The former Kogi State Acting Governor further stated that tackling insecurity effectively would require stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments.
He explained that a coordinated approach is necessary to confront the challenges posed by insurgent groups and criminal networks that continue to threaten lives and property across the region.
He also highlighted the importance of adopting practical and decisive measures aimed at reducing the burden currently borne by citizens.
According to him, efforts to improve security should be accompanied by policies and programmes designed to provide relief to affected populations, rebuild communities, and restore confidence among residents who have endured prolonged periods of uncertainty.
He said: “My heart bleeds when I see what is going on in most parts of the North. Our people in the North need empathy, and decisive action needs to be taken by the Federal Government in conjunction with all the states to reduce the ongoing suffering and humanitarian tragedy in the North.”
