It can seem counterintuitive to suggest some vegetables may not be ideal for your health. But certain nightshade vegetables, such as eggplants and tomatoes, may worsen arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. These may worsen arthritis and other autoimmune conditions.
1. Eggplants
Eggplant, or aubergine, is a nightshade vegetable known for its rich purple color. It contains antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, offering many potential health benefits. However, eating eggplant may cause inflammation in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Inflammatory properties: Eggplants contain solanine, a toxic plant compound that can contribute to bone and joint damage.3 Studies suggest that solanine can worsen symptoms of autoimmune diseases like arthritis.
2. Bell Peppers
Bell peppers are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber.5 However, they also contain compounds that may cause inflammation. Bell peppers contain capsaicin and solanine that may cause discomfort in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
3. Chili Peppers
Capsaicin gives chili peppers their spice. Some studies suggest capsaicin has anti-inflammatory properties, but other research disagrees. Capsaicin releases chemicals that cause inflammation and may trigger GI upset for some people.
4. Hot Peppers
Some studies suggest that hot peppers may be beneficial when consumed in moderation, but more research is needed to understand their mechanisms and potential health risks. Hot peppers such as jalapeños, habaneros, and serranos contain capsaicin, which may contribute to inflammation. Eating too many hot peppers may irritate the digestive tract and worsen chronic conditions like acid reflux.
